Windows is best for sharing files with Windows clients and Linux is best for sharing files with Linux clients. Make this project a goal for 6-12 months from now when you've had time to prepare properly. Sorry to dissuade you, that isn't the real goal, but your first goal should always be stability in your environment and this runs a substantial risk of disrupting that at this point.
